Flying with your dog doesn’t have to be stressful — especially if you start your journey at the right airport. Many airports across the U.S. have stepped up their game to provide a more comfortable and stress-free experience for both you and your furry friend. Whether you're flying with a service dog or a beloved pet, these airports have created pet-friendly amenities that cater to your needs.
As someone who frequently flies with my service dog Luciano from Omaha, NE to San Diego, CA, I always prioritize DEN for westbound layovers. One standout feature is their outdoor patio pet relief area located inside the terminal, post-security. Since Luciano, like many dogs, prefers outdoor spaces over indoor relief areas, this amenity brings me peace of mind, especially during flight delays. Having easy access to an outdoor pet relief area without the hassle of passing through security again makes travel much smoother and more enjoyable.
I am always on the lookout for pet-friendly airports that offer outdoor relief options. While I haven't visited every airport on this list, I would prioritize these 5 over less pet-accommodating airports.

JFK offers a variety of pet-friendly features, including:

One of the busiest airports in the world, ATL ensures your pet's comfort with:

The day before a travel day I am providing Luciano (my service dog) with extra activity and exercise. I am not feeding him anything new that may upset his stomach and depending on the time of travel holding food and water. Preparing for your flight with your service dog or pet requires thoughtful planning to ensure a stress-free experience. Start by familiarizing yourself with airport layouts and identifying pet relief areas in advance. Use training sessions to practice airport scenarios, such as security screenings and waiting in busy areas, to help your pet feel more at ease. Packing familiar treats and comfort items can also make a significant difference in keeping your pet relaxed during travel. Additionally, if your dog is still in training, consider short, frequent practice trips to build their confidence and reinforce positive behaviors in an airport environment.
These pet-friendly airports are leading the way in making travel more accessible and enjoyable for pet parents and their four-legged companions. Whether you're traveling for business, vacation, or with a service dog, these airports offer the amenities you need to make your journey stress-free.
Knowing which airports are pet-friendly is helpful, but the one thing that makes travel truly smooth is how well your dog behaves in real airport environments.
